Job Description: Shore Days Summer Camp Lead Teacher

Position Title: Lead Teacher
Location: Shore Days Summer Camp- 1300 Columbiana Road, Homewood AL 35209
Employment Type: Seasonal (Summer Day Camp)
Hours and Dates: June 2-July 25th, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-2:30pm
Compensation: $25/hour

About Us:

Shore Days exists to provide a space for families affected by disability to find support, be encouraged, and experience care. Our Summer Day Camp is dedicated to providing an inclusive, supportive, and fun summer experience for elementary-aged children with disabilities. Our day camp offers a safe and engaging environment where children can learn, grow, and build meaningful connections through tailored activities and support.

Position Summary:

We are seeking two compassionate and experienced Special Education Teachers to join our team for the summer day camp program. The ideal candidates will have a passion for working with children with diverse needs and abilities, creating individualized learning experiences, and fostering a positive, inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement age-appropriate activities and lessons tailored to the needs of children with disabilities, ensuring engagement, safety, and fun.

  • Collaborate with camp volunteers, support staff, and parents to create and maintain an individualized approach for each child.

  • Provide behavioral, social, and emotional support to campers using evidence-based strategies.

  • Adapt activities and instructional materials to meet varying abilities, including accommodations and modifications as needed.

  • Supervise and mentor volunteers and assistant teachers on best practices for working with children with disabilities.

  • Foster a nurturing, inclusive, and respectful environment that promotes self-confidence and independence.

  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding camper progress, concerns, and successes.

  • Ensure compliance with all safety and health protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Special Education, Education, or a related field.

  • Valid state teaching certification in Special Education is preferred.

  • Experience working with children with disabilities in an educational or recreational setting.

  • Knowledge of various disabilities and associated support strategies, including autism, ADHD, sensory processing challenges, and more.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with adaptive technologies and tools.

  • Training in behavior management techniques (e.g., ABA, PBIS).

  • Training with feeding tubes, handling of trach’s, seizure protocols, and other medical challenges that arise for children with disabilities.
