Job Description: Shore Days Summer Assistant Teacher

Position Title: Assistant Teacher
Location: Shore Days Summer Camp- 1300 Columbiana Road, Homewood AL 35209
Employment Type: Seasonal (Summer Day Camp)
Hours and Dates: June 2-July 25th, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-2:30pm
Compensation: $18/hour

About Us:

Shore Days exists to provide a space for families affected by disability to find support, be encouraged, and experience care. Our Summer Day Camp is dedicated to providing an inclusive, supportive, and fun summer experience for elementary-aged children with disabilities. Our day camp offers a safe and engaging environment where children can learn, grow, and build meaningful connections through tailored activities and support.

Position Summary:

We are seeking two compassionate and energetic Assistant Teachers to support lead teachers in delivering high-quality programming and ensuring the safety and well-being of our campers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist lead teachers in planning and implementing daily activities tailored to the individual needs and abilities of campers.

  • Provide hands-on support to children during group activities, ensuring inclusivity and engagement.

  • Supervise campers during all aspects of the day, including transitions, meals, and recreational activities.

  • Use positive behavior management techniques to foster a supportive and respectful environment.

  • Assist with personal care needs, including feeding, toileting, and mobility support, as needed.

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with lead teachers, staff, and parents/guardians regarding camper progress and any concerns.

  • Ensure a safe and clean environment by adhering to camp policies and procedures, including safety protocols and first aid measures.

  • Foster positive relationships with campers, families, and team members to build a sense of community.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, special education, or a related field preferred.

  • Experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, in an educational, recreational, or therapeutic setting.

  • Knowledge of inclusive practices and strategies for supporting diverse learning and developmental needs.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt to a dynamic environment.

  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before the camp starts).

  • Physical ability to engage in camp activities, including lifting and supporting children as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with adaptive technologies and tools.

  • Training in behavior management techniques (e.g., ABA, PBIS).

  • Training with feeding tubes, handling of trach’s, seizure protocols, and other medical challenges that arise for children with disabilities.
